Loggerheads have been doing this for more than a hundred million years. Longer than there have been ships. Longer than there were people around to build them.

Every summer the mothers come ashore after midnight, dig past the tide line, leave a hundred eggs or more behind, and slip back into the black water before sunrise. One female might do it four times in a season. Sometimes eight.

Two months later the sand starts to move. A whole handful of hatchlings comes up at once, each one small enough to sit in your palm, and every one of them answers the same question its kind has always answered. Which way is the sea? They cannot smell it. They do not remember it. They read the light, the bright sky over open water, and they run for it.
